The centre of Lagos is packed with restaurants, most found along Rua Afonso d’Almeida and its continuation Rua 25 de Abril. Where Avenida dos Descobrimentos meets Rua das Portas de Portugal, there’s a diverting fish and vegetable market (Mon–Sat 8am-2pm), in front of which is a line of good, unpretentious fish restaurants. Menus are of a similar standard and price almost everywhere, though Lagos does also have a couple of highly regarded places where it’s worth pushing the boat out.
Estrela do Mar Mercado Municipal, off Av dos Descobrimentos Tel 282 769 250. Atop the main mercado and boasting fine views from its terrace, this swish place serves fresh fish straight from the market along with speciality cataplanas. Live music every other Sat completes its attractions. Expensive. O Franguinho Rua Luís de Azevedo 25. Bustling churrasqueira with a tiny first-floor dining room. This is the place to come for barbecued chicken or febras de porco (grilled pork steaks). There are daily changing specials, too. Closed Mon. Inexpensive.
Bar Lota Doca Pesca Tel 282 764 048. At the station end of the fishing harbour over the bridge past the marina. Very much a local haunt with wooden benches as rough-looking as the clientele, but the fresh fish is, as you’d expect, hard to beat. Tables inside and out. Inexpensive.
Taberna de Lagos Rua 25 de Abril Tel 282 084 250. Lovely, high-ceilinged 400-year old mansion converted into a sophisticated bar-restaurant that attracts a laid-back, arty crowd. Fresh organic dishes include steaks, pasta and fish while the fruit and ice cream desserts are also superb. If you don’t fancy a full meal, pop in for shots or a cocktail. Expensive.
A Lagosteira Rua 1 de Maio 20 Tel 282 762 486. Upmarket, blue-tiled restaurant specializing in camarão flambé (flambéed prawns), fish cooked in a cataplana and, of course lobster. Daily specials too. Expensive.
O Pescador Rua Gil Eanes 6–10 Tel 282 767 028. Unglamorous modern decor is compensated for by friendly service and excellent fish and grills. Closed Sun. Moderate.
Casa do Zé Av dos Descobrimentos. On the corner with the market, and open until 2am, where filling fish dishes are served at very fair prices. It’s very much a locals’ choice at lunchtime, with the outdoor seating soaking up a brisk trade – daily specials cost around e7. Inexpensive.
