Where to stay when traveling to Lagos

Most of the town’s hotels and pensões are fully booked through the summer so if you turn up without a reservation, your best chance of a bed will be a room in a private house.

The tourist office may phone around and try to find you a space, though you’ll probably be met by touts at the bus or train station. There’s a youth hostel in town, while Lagos also has a campsite, to the west of the centre, near Praia de Dona Ana

Pensão Caravela Rua 25 de Abril 16 Tel 282 763 361. Unspectacular but well-placed rooms on the town’s main pedestrianized street. Doubles come with or without bath

Pensão Lagosmar Rua Dr. F. Silva 13 Tel 282 763 523, [email protected] Upmarket pensão on a quiet street, where some rooms have small balconies

Residencial Marazul Rua 25 de Abril 13 Tel 282 770 230, www.pensaomarazul.com. Beautifully decorated residencial, with bright rooms and communal areas tiled in azulejos. The en-suite bedrooms vary in size, but all come with TVs and some have terraces with sea views. Closed Oct–March

Albergaria Marina Rio Av dos Descobrimentos 388 Tel 282 769 859, www.marinario.com. A large, modern four-star inn facing the harbour (though back rooms face the bus station). Bland but good facilities, including satellite TV, a games room and rooftop pool.

Hotel Rio Mar Rua Cândido dos Reis 83 Tel 282 763 091, [email protected] Smart, mediumsized hotel with its own bar, tucked into a central street. Most rooms have a balcony – the best overlook the sea at the back of the hotel, others overlook a fairly quiet main street. Good value

Tivoli Lagos Rua Nova da Aldeia Tel 282 790 079, www.tivolilagos.com. Lagos’s most upmarket central hotel (5min from the market) is built round a central garden area with its own pool. Not all the rooms are spacious, and some overlook a busy street, but the best have terraces with fine views. There are two restaurants, bar, indoor and outdoor pool, and health club, plus a courtesy bus to its own beach club at Meia Praia. Parking available.

Meia Praia Beach Club Meia Praia Tel 282 789 400, www.dompedro.com. A 10min drive from Lagos, just back from one of the best stretches of beach, this tasteful three-star is set in attractive grounds; the best rooms have sea-facing balconies.

Apartments for 4–6 people are also available, there are tennis courts and a pool, while guests are entitled to discounts at the Palmares Golf Course. Parking

Sol e Praia Praia de Dona Ana Tel 282 764 462, www.dfhoteis.com. The best option on this stretch, close to the steps down to the beach and with a pool, gym and games room. Most rooms have coastal-facing balconies

Pousada de Juventude Rua de Lançarote de Freitas 50 Tel 282 761 970, www .pousadasjuventude.pt. Modern, well-designed youth hostel, just up from the Centro Cultural de Lagos, with several dorms plus a few en-suite doubles (book in advance for these). There’s a pleasant courtyard plus Internet access, laundry facilities and currency exchange. Dorms e16, rooms

Campismo da Trindade Rossio da Trindade Tel 282 763 893, F282 762 885. Wedged up by the Clube de Futebal Esperança de Lagos on the way to Praia de Dona Ana, this is a basic and cramped campsite with a small shop. In season a bus marked “D. Ana/Porto de Mós” runs to the site from the bus station. On foot, follow the main Sagres road around the old town and it’s 10–15min from the Forte Ponta da Bandeira to the site.
